The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Ltd has taken a major step toward expanding urban transit in the state by submitting Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for metro rail projects in Vadodara and Rajkot, along with two extensions to the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network. The DPRs have been forwarded to the Union government for final approval and funding after receiving clearance from the Gujarat state government.
The new city metro projects include a 40-kilometer corridor in Vadodara with an estimated cost of ₹11,000 crore, aimed at connecting industrial zones, commercial hubs such as Alkapuri and Akota, and the Vadodara airport. A key section will also link the old city with the GSFC industrial area via the railway station.
Rajkot’s proposed metro project spans 38 kilometers at an estimated cost of ₹10,000 crore, designed to serve the city's expanding urban areas while providing improved connectivity to the railway station and major city centers.
Both metro systems will consist of two lines each, with predominantly elevated tracks and select underground segments in densely populated or sensitive zones.
Additionally, GMRC has proposed extending the Ahmedabad metro within GIFT City and introducing a new line from Koteshwar to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
A GMRC official confirmed that the state government has requested the Union government to cover 50% of the total project costs. "Once central funding is approved, the state government will initiate project execution, as DPRs for all four developments have already been finalized," the official said.
These projects represent a significant advancement in Gujarat’s urban mobility infrastructure and aim to provide efficient, modern transit options to meet the needs of growing cities.
