The Central Railway is formulating a plan to ease congestion on the heavily used Kalyan–Thane corridor, one of the busiest rail stretches in the country, with nearly 1,000 trains operating on it every day.
A feasibility study is currently underway to assess the addition of seventh and eighth rail lines along this route, including the possibility of constructing an underground section near Dombivli. The initiative is part of a larger strategy aimed at improving operational efficiency and easing daily commuter challenges. A third-party agency has been appointed to carry out a detailed survey, with findings expected by mid-2026.
Thane, Diva, and Kalyan stations serve as major transit hubs on this corridor, collectively handling more than 1.2 million passengers each day. The proposed additional lines will also facilitate the planned expansion of the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) and Parel terminals, enabling better segregation of suburban and long-distance rail traffic.
According to railway officials, there is scope for horizontal expansion at select locations along the Thane–Kalyan stretch, which could support the proposed infrastructure upgrades.
