Gadkari Flags Off Rs 6,600 Crore Highway Bonanza for Odisha

On February 15, 2024, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, inaugurated 28 significant national highway projects in Odisha, collectively valued at Rs 6,600 crore, utilizing video conferencing technology. Notable among these projects include a 79-kilometer four-lane road linking Baharagora and Singhara on NH-49, costing Rs 1,203 crore, and a 78-kilometer six-lane road from Chandikhol to Bhadrak on NH-16, with an investment of Rs 2,035 crore.

Moreover, the Minister laid the foundation stones for an additional 26 road infrastructure projects across the state. Furthermore, there are ongoing efforts towards completing projects covering 1,312 kilometers of national highways, with an investment totaling Rs 22,000 crore, slated for completion during the fiscal year 2024-25.

The Ministry is actively engaged in developing detailed project reports (DPRs) for the construction of 746 kilometers of roads, estimated to require an investment of Rs 60,000 crore. Additionally, Minister Gadkari unveiled plans for various infrastructural undertakings, including the construction of a 111-kilometer greenfield ring road encircling Bhubaneswar city, budgeted at Rs 6,253 crore. This ambitious initiative aims to enhance connectivity and ease traffic congestion for the residents of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Khurda.

The project will be executed in two distinct packages. Package-I involves the construction of a 71-kilometer six-lane road stretching from Rameswar to Govindpur, with a budget of Rs 4,426 crore, while Package-II encompasses the segment from Govindpur to Tangi spanning 40 kilometers, requiring an investment of Rs 2,287 crore.

Furthermore, plans include the development of a 35-kilometer four-lane greenfield ring road in Sambalpur, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 1,333 crore, with construction scheduled to commence in October 2024. These initiatives underscore the government's commitment to enhancing the transportation infrastructure in Odisha, thereby facilitating economic growth and regional development.
