Pune’s New Circle of Progress: The Outer Ring Road Takes Shape

The first phase of the Pune Outer Ring Road, being developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), is nearing completion and is expected to significantly enhance the city’s transport infrastructure.

Conceived as a circular, access-controlled highway, the project aims to ease traffic congestion by diverting long-distance and commercial vehicles away from the city centre. Surveys, route demarcation, and initial feasibility studies have largely been completed, and construction is progressing steadily. Key infrastructure works, including bridges and tunnels near Sangrun and Davaje villages along the Khadakwasla dam backwaters, are expected to enable faster and smoother travel.

Once operational, the outer ring road is anticipated to reduce traffic congestion, lower pollution levels, and improve overall road safety. The corridor will also connect with major highways, including the Pune–Bengaluru expressway, thereby strengthening regional connectivity. According to officials overseeing the project, the ring road will not only ease daily traffic movement but also support Pune’s planned and organised urban growth.
