The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved ₹951.27 crore for the construction of a 29.03 km long bypass in Tura, located in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. The initiative is aimed at decongesting Tura town—the district headquarters—by redirecting through-traffic away from densely populated urban areas, thereby enhancing road safety and improving overall traffic management.
Announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari via social media, the project involves the construction of a two-lane road with paved shoulders. The bypass will link National Highway 127B with National Highway 217 (formerly NH-51), the key route connecting Guwahati to Dalu on the India-Bangladesh border. The alignment will start near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and conclude at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217.
Currently, NH-217 runs directly through Tura’s urban center, where narrow roads and traffic congestion are common. The new bypass is expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve traffic flow, and create a safer, more efficient transportation corridor by separating local and long-distance traffic.
