Vellore's ₹753 Crore Bypass to Transform Regional Connectivity

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved the construction of a 20.4-km western ring road (bypass) for Vellore city in Tamil Nadu, with an allocated budget of Rs 753 crore. This four-lane bypass aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the region.

The ring road will begin at Vandranthangal on NH-75 (formerly NH-234) in the Katpadi-Latteri-Gudiyatham section, passing through key routes to offer a smoother and more efficient transit network.

The proposed bypass will provide seamless access for vehicles from Chittoor, Katpadi, V Kota, Latteri, and Vaniyambadi to the medical college hospital at Adukkamparai, as well as to Arani and Tiruvannamalai, bypassing the city entirely. This route will also allow travelers from Villupuram, Kalasapakkam, and Arani heading to Bengaluru, Chittoor, and Gudiyatham to avoid entering Vellore, significantly reducing travel time by 30 to 45 minutes.

The land acquisition will facilitate a 50-meter right-of-way, exceeding the usual 30 meters, to accommodate future expansion into a six-lane carriageway with two-lane service roads, in line with Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards. Additionally, the project will include cross-drainage systems and bridge structures to address local flooding concerns.
