Powering Delhi: Co-op Societies Go Solar!

The Delhi government is set to roll out a targeted initiative under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, focusing on installing rooftop solar panels in cooperative group housing societies and dairy cooperative societies.

Senior officials from the Union Ministry of Cooperation and Delhi’s Registrar of Cooperative Societies recently convened to strategize the program’s implementation. In the pilot phase, one housing cooperative and one dairy society will be identified to kickstart the scheme. Federations and managing committees have been tasked with shortlisting societies that have suitable rooftop infrastructure.

Despite previous initiatives, the adoption of rooftop solar in Delhi has remained sluggish. In response, the Delhi government has introduced a top-up subsidy of ₹30,000 in addition to the Centre’s subsidy of ₹78,000, offering residents a combined benefit of ₹1.08 lakh for installing a 3 kW solar system.

The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is a central government initiative aimed at providing free electricity to one crore households nationwide through rooftop solar installations. By leveraging the cooperative model, authorities aim to accelerate solar adoption in the capital and strengthen its transition toward sustainable energy.
