Sun on the Stream: Maharashtra’s Bold Leap into Floating Solar

Maharashtra plans to develop floating solar power projects on dams across the Krishna and Godavari river basins to boost renewable energy generation and support environmental conservation.

Speaking at a seminar in Pune, State Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said the initiative will utilise existing water bodies for clean energy production, reducing the need for land acquisition. The projects are expected to strengthen Maharashtra’s renewable energy portfolio while advancing sustainable development goals. The move follows directions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who has asked the Water Resources Department to actively pursue floating solar initiatives.

Floating solar plants offer key advantages in a densely populated state, as they generate electricity without occupying land. The projects are also expected to benefit agricultural communities by supporting power needs, reducing water evaporation, and improving solar panel efficiency due to the cooling effect of water.
