Cleared for Takeoff: Om Birla Fast-Tracks Kota-Bundi Greenfield Airport

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla chaired a high-level review meeting on 26 May 2026 to evaluate the progress of the Kota-Bundi Greenfield Airport project in Rajasthan.

The review meeting was attended virtually by senior officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) along with representatives from district administrations, the Kota Development Authority, Power Grid, the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), and the Forest Department. Officials informed that construction activities are progressing according to schedule, with the runway expected to be operational for aircraft movement by October 2027 and full commercial flight operations likely to commence by December 2027.

The airport is being developed across 1,088 acres and will feature a 3.2-kilometre runway capable of handling large aircraft. Once completed, the facility is expected to handle approximately two million passengers annually, significantly improving regional air connectivity and supporting economic development in the Kota-Bundi region.

During the meeting, Om Birla also proposed exploring the development of a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility near the airport to promote aviation-linked industrial growth and employment generation. In addition, he suggested evaluating the establishment of a flying training school at the site of the existing old airport to further strengthen the region’s aviation ecosystem.
