Mobis India, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor India, has inaugurated its Electric Vehicle Battery System Assembly (BSA) plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
Occupying 8.15 acres adjacent to Hyundai’s vehicle manufacturing facility, the new plant marks a significant step in enhancing India’s electric mobility ecosystem. The facility was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, alongside key state officials and company executives.
With an initial capacity of 36,000 units annually—expandable to 75,000 units—the plant will assemble high-performance battery systems for locally manufactured EVs. The Hyundai CRETA Electric will be the first model to use battery packs from this facility, underscoring Hyundai’s growing focus on domestic EV production.
“This facility strengthens Tamil Nadu’s localisation capabilities by ensuring critical EV components are made here,” said Minister Rajaa. “It reflects our shift toward smart manufacturing and commitment to high-value employment.” The project is expected to create 255 direct and indirect jobs, contributing to the regional economy.
Currently, the plant manufactures nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery packs and is set to support Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) batteries soon. Featuring fully automated robotic assembly lines, the facility is designed for precision and efficiency, while adhering to sustainable construction and operational practices.
