The Tamil Nadu government has approved the issuance of green municipal bonds to fund the Greater Chennai Corporation’s (GCC) project for land reclamation and legacy waste management at the Kodungaiyur dump yard in North Chennai.
The project involves the scientific excavation and processing of 66.52 lakh tonnes of accumulated waste spread across 252 acres, aimed at restoring the environment and improving long-term waste management. With an estimated cost of Rs 646.38 crore, the initiative will be financed under Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, with contributions from the Central Government (25%), State Government (16%), and GCC (59%).
Funds raised through the green bonds will accelerate the ongoing biomining and reclamation efforts, significantly enhancing Chennai’s waste management infrastructure and environmental quality.
