A Greener Mumbai: Mankhurd to Host Major Compressed Biogas Plant

Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have entered into a concession agreement for Phase-I of a compressed biogas (CBG) plant at Mankhurd, marking an important step in strengthening Mumbai’s sustainable waste management and renewable energy infrastructure.

The agreement, formalised on 1 June 2026, covers the development of a facility with a processing capacity of 350 tonnes per day (TPD). The project is designed to convert segregated municipal organic waste into compressed biogas, thereby supporting clean energy generation while reducing dependence on landfill disposal.

The plant will process organic waste sourced from hotels, vegetable markets, and kitchen waste streams. By converting biodegradable waste into usable fuel, the initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to Mumbai’s broader climate action and environmental sustainability goals. It also reinforces the city’s efforts to build a more efficient circular economy through waste-to-energy solutions.

The collaboration between MGL and BMC is expected to improve urban waste processing efficiency, enhance resource recovery, and support long-term environmental resilience by enabling the production of renewable energy from organic waste.
