A New Dawn for J&K: Modi's ₹46,000 Cr Infrastructure Push

Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a landmark visit to Jammu & Kashmir on June 6, 2025, by unveiling infrastructure projects worth Rs 46,000 crore, marking what he called a “historic day” for the region.

A major highlight of the visit was the inauguration of key sections of the Rs 43,780 crore Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), including the Banihal–Katra stretch, which will soon enable seamless rail connectivity between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley. The Prime Minister also flagged off the region’s first Vande Bharat Express, connecting Katra to Srinagar.

Two engineering marvels were inaugurated: the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge—both crucial components of the USBRL.

The visit also saw the launch of road infrastructure projects worth Rs 1,952 crore. These include the widening of the Rafiabad–Kupwara road (NH-701), development of the Shopian bypass (NH-444), and the inauguration of two major flyovers at Sangrama Junction (NH-1) and Bemina Junction (NH-44) in Srinagar.

Further strengthening the region’s healthcare and education infrastructure, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra, a Rs 350 crore initiative and the first medical college in Reasi district.

These ambitious projects aim to significantly improve connectivity, promote tourism, enhance healthcare access, and generate employment opportunities across Jammu & Kashmir.
