A New Era for Halwara: Airport Set for Launch

The handover of the under-construction Halwara International Airport to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is progressing steadily, with officials anticipating completion within a month. The Public Works Department (PWD), responsible for the airport’s construction, is conducting final inspections before AAI assumes control and initiates operational preparations.

A PWD official confirmed that the transfer process began last week, focusing on key infrastructure elements such as public health systems, electrical setups, and fire safety measures. "AAI needs to verify these systems before taking full control, as they will be responsible for making the airport operational," the official stated. The handover is expected to be finalized by mid-April, after which AAI will proceed with obtaining the necessary operational clearances.

The terminal building is complete, with air conditioning, baggage handling, and lighting systems already functional. Final furnishing will be completed closer to the airport’s launch to prevent dust accumulation.

Meanwhile, runway carpeting is set to begin this week and is scheduled for completion by mid-April. "Runway work requires specific temperature conditions, and March provides the ideal window for this," an official explained. The final layers of Link Taxi Tracks 1 and 2 will also be laid this month, with a trolley gate already installed.

An AAI official noted that only minor finishing tasks remain and that AAI is coordinating closely with the PWD and the Air Force to accelerate the airport’s readiness. Local residents and businesses eagerly anticipate the airport’s launch, viewing it as a significant boost to trade, industry, and travel in the region.
