The Andhra Pradesh government has approved a budget of ₹13.42 crore for conducting a comprehensive LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey to assess the condition of the Godavari delta irrigation system and the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram.
The high-precision survey, to be carried out using a specialized aircraft, will map key infrastructure such as canals, embankments, and encroachments. Experts have finalized the methodology to generate scientific data essential for planning and implementing modernization works in the irrigation network.
The Godavari delta, a vital irrigation source supporting over 10 lakh acres of farmland and supplying drinking water to more than 1.2 crore people, includes 788 km of major canals, 4,578 km of minor canals, and an extensive drainage system. The LiDAR survey is expected to be completed within six to nine months and will serve as a foundation for future irrigation reforms in the region.
