Beyond LPG: BPCL's ₹2,000 Crore Project Brings Clean Gas to Bihar

The foundation stone for a medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) pipeline under Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (BPCL) City Gas Distribution (CGD) project was laid in Motihari, Bihar by Member of Parliament and former Union Minister Radha Mohan Singh.

The ₹2,000 crore project aims to supply piped natural gas (PNG) to approximately 50,000 households in the region within a year. It will provide clean, affordable, and uninterrupted fuel directly to homes, significantly reducing dependence on conventional fuels such as LPG.

Highlighting the government's efforts to expand gas infrastructure, the Minister noted that India’s gas pipeline network has grown from 15,340 km in 2014 to nearly 25,000 km today, with an additional 10,000 km under construction. BPCL has been authorised by the Ministry of Petroleum to implement the CGD project across the districts of East and West Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, and Deoria.

In parallel, a steel pipeline is being laid from Gorakhpur to Bettiah and Raxaul, passing through Deoria, Siwan, and Gopalganj. The broader initiative is expected to benefit not only households but also hotels, restaurants, and small-scale industries across the region.
