Bhubaneswar Metro and Tourism Projects Get Major Funding Boost

Urban infrastructure in Odisha is set for a transformation with a Rs 9,603 crore allocation in the 2024-25 budget. A key highlight is the Rs 1,000 crore earmarked for the Bhubaneswar Metro project. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized the metro's importance, with Phase 1 connecting Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar to Trisulia Square in Cuttack by 2027 at a cost of Rs 6,256 crore.

Additionally, Rs 918 crore is set aside for new city development, and Rs 606 crore for the Unnati scheme, which focuses on smart cities and digital infrastructure to enhance urban management and services. Urban water supply, sanitation, and sewerage projects receive substantial funding, with Rs 357 crore for Basudha, Rs 380 crore for sanitation, and Rs 214 crore for sewerage improvements.

The tourism sector has been allocated Rs 800 crore, with Rs 445 crore dedicated to developing and managing tourist infrastructure. Promotion of tourism products will see a Rs 279 crore investment. The publicity budget has also increased to Rs 157 crore.

Moreover, Rs 50 crore is designated for the Mahanadi Riverfront Development scheme, aiming to develop areas along the Mahanadi River in Sambalpur and Cuttack, inspired by Gujarat’s Sabarmati Riverfront project.
