Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd. is set to establish India’s first large-scale polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastics plant under the brand name Bioyug, with commissioning targeted for October 2026.
The ₹2,850 crore project will utilize sugarcane as a feedstock to produce 80,000 tonnes of compostable, low-emission plastics annually. Executive Director Avantika Saraogi noted that PLA, derived from renewable sources such as sugarcane, provides a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics. While current production costs remain higher, scaling up operations is expected to make PLA increasingly cost-competitive over time.
Balrampur Chini aims to have its green portfolio—comprising ethanol, co-generation power, and PLA—contribute 50% of total revenue by FY27–28. The Bioyug project represents a key milestone in the company’s green transition and underscores the broader shift within India’s sugar industry toward sustainable, low-carbon solutions.
