The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has initiated a comprehensive mid-life refurbishment programme for its Blue Line trains, aimed at enhancing passenger safety, comfort, and overall travel experience. The initiative focuses on upgrading the oldest rolling stock (RS-1) trains with modern technology and improved amenities to ensure continued reliability and compliance with current standards.
Under the programme, DMRC is refurbishing a total of 70 trains across the Red and Blue lines in a phased manner. The first phase saw the upgrade of 12 trains, followed by 18 trains in the second phase. Work on an additional nine trains is set to commence shortly, after which the remaining trains in this phase will be taken up. The third phase will cover 22 Blue Line trains, with completion targeted by November 2027.
Originally inducted between 2002 and 2007, these trains have completed nearly two decades of service and are now being modernised with upgraded systems and enhanced passenger features aligned with the latest rolling stock standards. DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar recently inspected the first refurbished train under the third phase before its induction into passenger service.
With 31 trains refurbished so far, the programme reflects DMRC’s continued focus on modernisation, operational efficiency, and improving the daily commuting experience across its network.
