The BMC has secured Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) clearance for an 8.48-km tunnel that will transport tertiary-treated water from the Dharavi Wastewater Treatment Facility to the Bhandup Water Filtration Plant via the Ghatkopar unit.
With this approval, work can now begin on the ₹3,000-crore project, which forms part of a larger ₹27,309-crore initiative to upgrade seven sewage treatment plants. Once complete, Mumbai will be able to treat 2,464 MLD of sewage, with half of that processed to tertiary standards. The tunnel will run 145–150 metres underground, reaching a depth of 152 metres at Ghatkopar, and will carry 416 MLD of treated water for further use.
A senior official said the clearance allows construction to proceed and noted that the treated water may eventually help meet Mumbai’s future potable water requirements. The city currently treats 2,464 MLD of sewage, even as 34% of its water is lost as non-revenue water.
