Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) and Temasek-backed Sembcorp have entered into a strategic joint venture to explore and advance renewable energy and green hydrogen projects across India, marking a significant step toward supporting the nation's climate objectives.
The collaboration will focus on key initiatives, including the production of green ammonia, development of bunkering solutions, and efforts to reduce emissions in port operations. Additionally, the venture will explore emerging green fuel technologies. This partnership is designed to support India's energy transition and assist in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors.
BPCL Chairman and Managing Director G Krishnakumar emphasized the significance of the partnership, describing it as a crucial milestone in BPCL’s journey towards sustainability. He reiterated BPCL’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, targeting Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and building a 10 GW renewable energy portfolio to facilitate the transition. Krishnakumar also highlighted the focus on innovative, best-in-class solutions in the green energy sector.
Sembcorp, which currently manages 6 GW of renewable assets in India, views green hydrogen and green ammonia as vital components for decarbonising energy systems. This joint venture aligns with India's national goals for clean energy, with both BPCL and Sembcorp leveraging their expertise to lead in renewable energy and hydrogen-based solutions.
