BWSSB Seeks GBA Nod to Remove 615 Trees for STP Construction

The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has sought approval from the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to remove 615 trees for the construction of sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the Doddabele and Mallasandra areas.

The proposal involves the removal of 355 trees at Doddabele for the construction of a 100 million litres per day (MLD) STP and 310 trees at Mallasandra for another STP of 100 MLD capacity. The request follows a similar proposal by the Council of Architecture, which had sought permission to remove or translocate 355 trees at its Bengaluru University campus office compound for development-related works.

The GBA’s forest department has invited public objections and suggestions within 10 days of a notification issued on December 24. A senior GBA official stated that all responses would be placed before the tree committee, and further action would be taken based on its recommendations.

The BWSSB’s proposal is being examined under Section 3(3)(vii) of the Karnataka Tree Preservation Act, 1976.
