Chennai residents across several zones will soon benefit from enhanced water supply, as Chennai Metrowater begins trial runs of the second pipeline from the Chembarambakkam water treatment plant.
The ₹66.78 crore project will double the plant’s daily output from 265 million litres (MLD) to its full capacity of 530 MLD. Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru inspected the project on August 20, 2025, ahead of its upcoming inauguration. According to officials, the increased supply will cover key areas within the Greater Chennai Corporation—including Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Adyar, and Alandur—as well as Tambaram Corporation and the municipalities of Kundrathur and Sriperumbudur.
The new infrastructure includes an 11.7 km pipeline from Chembarambakkam to Porur and a 9.2 km extension from the Poonamallee Bypass Road junction to Koyambedu. Launched in 2013, the project faced delays due to challenges like laying pipes six feet underground. The recent inspection, attended by Minorities Welfare Minister S.M. Nasar, Poonamallee MLA A. Krishnaswamy, and senior officials, signals the final phase of work toward improved urban water distribution.
