Chennai Airport's Mega-Upgrade: 35 Million Passengers, Coming 2026!

The second phase of Chennai International Airport’s expansion and modernization is set for completion by March 2026, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol informed the Rajya Sabha in response to a query from Tamil Nadu MP Vaiko.

Phase 2 focuses on developing Terminal-3, increasing the airport’s capacity to 35 million passengers per annum (MPPA). The project will introduce upgraded passenger amenities, including additional check-in and immigration counters, Automatic Tray Return Systems at security checks, and more baggage belts.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is managing the airport’s two-phase expansion at a total cost of ₹2,467 crore. Phase 1 included the construction of a new Integrated Terminal Building, raising the passenger handling capacity from 23 MPPA to 30 MPPA. Operational since July 2023, the terminal provides upgraded facilities for travelers.
