The 4-lane, double-tier elevated corridor linking Chennai Port to Maduravoyal is expected to be completed by November 2027, according to Virender Sambal, Regional Officer of the National Highways Authority of India. The project is being developed at a cost of over ₹3,500 crore.
The 20.9-km corridor was originally launched in 2010 but was terminated in 2016 before being revived in 2023 following requests from the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Chennai Port Trust, based on the recommendations of a technical committee. The double-tier design will separate different categories of traffic, helping improve traffic flow and safety.
According to an NHAI statement, the project is expected to significantly boost cargo handling capacity at Chennai Port, increasing it from the current 53 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to an estimated 200 mtpa by 2047. The corridor is considered a key infrastructure initiative aimed at strengthening logistics and trade efficiency in the region.
