CIL Launches Syngas Expansion to Secure India’s Energy Future

Coal India Limited is planning to set up coal-to-syngas production facilities at pithead locations and near major consuming industries such as fertiliser plants, direct-reduced iron (DRI) units, and gas-based power plants, amid disruptions in natural gas supplies linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict, according to sources.

The state-run miner, which accounts for over 80 per cent of India’s domestic coal output, has already initiated efforts to develop coal-to-syngas infrastructure as part of its broader diversification and value-addition strategy.

Sources said the initiative is aligned with the government’s National Mission on Coal Gasification and supports India’s wider objective of strengthening domestic energy, chemical, and feedstock security.

The proposed projects are intended to cater to rising syngas demand from industries that rely heavily on natural gas, including fertiliser manufacturers, DRI units, and gas-based power producers, at a time when global energy supply chains continue to face volatility and supply pressures.
