CIP & BII Launch $300M 'North Star' Platform in India

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and British International Investment (BII) have launched a $300 million renewable energy investment platform named North Star, focused on India’s clean energy sector.

Both partners will invest up to $150 million each, with CIP channeling its commitment through its Growth Markets Fund II. The platform will focus on development and construction-stage investments in solar, wind, hybrid, and energy storage projects, aiming to accelerate clean energy capacity addition in India.

North Star is designed to help address India’s estimated $160 billion annual renewable energy financing gap, as the country pursues its goal of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030. Despite strong tender activity in the sector, developers continue to face challenges related to capital access and project execution, which the platform seeks to ease by funding projects expected to generate over four million MWh of clean electricity annually.

The initiative also marks the first investment under BII’s new British Climate Partners programme, a five-year strategy aimed at mobilising £3.5 billion in private institutional capital for climate-focused investments across fast-growing Asian economies, including India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
