Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded contracts worth nearly ₹436 crore for integrated transit-oriented development (TOD) projects along the city’s IT corridor. These initiatives align with CMRL’s strategy to monetise station-area real estate while enhancing last-mile connectivity and commuter access to the metro network.
Of the total investment, approximately ₹268.8 crore has been allocated for the design and construction of integrated entry and exit structures with commercial spaces at Sholinganallur and Thoraipakkam metro stations on Old Mahabalipuram Road, a key technology and business corridor. The scope of work includes civil construction and architectural finishes designed to seamlessly integrate transit infrastructure with commercial development.
The Thoraipakkam station will feature a multi-level commercial building, while the Sholinganallur station will host a larger eight-floor commercial complex. A key highlight of the Sholinganallur project is the incorporation of a link line connecting Corridor-3 and Corridor-5 within the commercial structure, enabling direct metro access. CMRL stated that these developments are intended to improve pedestrian mobility and reduce reliance on private vehicles.
