Dairy's Green Leap: 15 States, 10,000 Plants, One Sustainable Future.

The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has partnered with Bangalore-based NGO Sustain Plus to launch a large-scale circular dairy initiative. This programme will see the installation of 10,000 biogas plants across 15 Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar.

Announced at the ‘Workshop on Sustainability and Circularity in the Dairy Sector’ in New Delhi, the initiative aims to promote climate-smart dairy villages and sustainable farming practices. Over the next four years, these biogas digesters will produce three lakh tonnes of organic slurry annually, reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers. They will also generate over seven million cubic meters of biogas, providing clean cooking fuel to 10,000 rural households. Additionally, the programme will facilitate the production of 60,000 tonnes of phosphate-rich organic manure (PROM), offering a sustainable alternative to chemical phosphate fertilisers.

This NDDB-Sustain Plus collaboration is set to benefit dairy farmers by enhancing manure management, integrating renewable energy solutions, and strengthening dairy infrastructure. The initiative will help reduce input costs, improve soil health, provide clean energy for households, and create new economic opportunities through organic fertilisers and carbon credits.
