Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced that the state’s longest flyover, the Avinashi Road Elevated Corridor in Coimbatore, will be named in honour of legendary inventor and industrialist G.D. Naidu, often hailed as the ‘Edison of India’.
The 10.10-km-long flyover, constructed at a cost of ₹1,791.22 crore, stretches from Uppilipalayam to Goldwins and is designed to decongest one of Coimbatore’s busiest arterial roads. The corridor, with a width of 17.25 metres, incorporates innovative safety features such as roller crash barriers on ramps and rumble strips at merging points to minimise the risk of accidents and enhance commuter safety.
Although the project was sanctioned in August 2020, only 5% of construction had been completed initially. CM Stalin credited the rapid completion of the remaining 95% of the work to the Dravidian model of governance, emphasizing efficiency and public service.
The naming of the flyover has been widely welcomed by local entrepreneurs, industrialists, and residents, who praised G.D. Naidu’s legacy of innovation, technical excellence, and contributions to society.
