Flowing Strong: Chennai's Canals Get a ₹1,321-Crore Boost

The Water Resources Department (WRD) is set to begin critical canal strengthening works in Chennai as part of a ₹1,321-crore initiative under the Comprehensive Water Resources Development Programme. The project aims to ensure the uninterrupted flow of Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh to Chennai’s key reservoirs.

Across Tamil Nadu, a total of 254 works will be undertaken—including restoration of water bodies, flood mitigation infrastructure, dam modernization, and upgrades to irrigation systems. In Tiruvallur district, the Kandaleru–Poondi (K–P) Canal, a vital conduit for Chennai’s water supply, will be reinforced over a two-kilometre stretch with slope protection lining and retaining walls at a cost of ₹10.20 crore.

The canal currently carries 500 cusecs of Krishna water daily; however, seepage losses of 5%–10% and erosion along the bunds have raised concerns. Strengthening measures near Uthukottai and Tamaraikuppam are expected to address these issues and improve water retention.

Additionally, the feeder canal from Poondi to Red Hills will be upgraded over a 3.3-kilometre stretch at a cost of ₹10.75 crore, including repairs to culverts and inlets. Since 1 July, Chennai has received 785 million cubic feet (mcft) of Krishna water, with the potential to reach 1,300 mcft—equivalent to a month’s supply—if current flow levels are sustained.
