Great Nicobar Gets a ₹41,000 Crore Mega Terminal

The Great Nicobar Island is set for a monumental transformation with a ₹41,000-crore International Container Transshipment Terminal. The ambitious project includes a state-of-the-art 450-MW LNG-based power plant, spearheaded by NTPC, and a new greenfield international airport, courtesy of the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Envisioned as a comprehensive development, the project will feature not only the transshipment port and airport but also a new township, promising to significantly enhance the island's infrastructure. This initiative aims to diminish reliance on neighboring transshipment hubs and slash container logistics costs.

The Public Investment Board (PIB) will soon appraise the project, paving the way for Union Cabinet approval. Integral to the project are LNG handling facilities, which will be incorporated into the transshipment terminal.

The development will unfold in four phases, each adding four million twenty-foot equivalent units (MTEUs), ultimately reaching a capacity of 16 MTEUs by 2059. The port is poised to become a crucial regional hub serving Bangladesh, Myanmar, and India's eastern coast.

This mega-project promises to transform Great Nicobar Island into a strategic logistics and transportation epicenter.
