Green Light for Bijwasan: CEC Clears Path for Mega Rail Terminal

The Centre Empowered Committee (CEC), functioning under the supervision of the Supreme Court, has granted final approval for the removal of 1,279 trees obstructing the Bijwasan Rail Terminal project in Dwarka Sector 21, Delhi.

This clearance removes the final major environmental hurdle for the project, enabling the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) to move ahead with critical infrastructure works near Indira Gandhi International Airport. While the RLDA initially sought permission to remove 1,293 trees, the number was reduced to 1,279 following detailed deliberations. As part of the mitigation measures, 496 trees will be transplanted, and the loss of the remaining 783 trees will be compensated through plantation drives across Delhi and afforestation initiatives in outer Delhi.

The approval was granted despite objections from environmental activists, who contend that the area forms part of the “Dwarka Forest,” a biodiverse zone supporting local wildlife.

Once completed, the Bijwasan Rail Terminal is expected to significantly decongest the New Delhi Railway Station. The terminal will feature 11 tracks, modern passenger amenities, and seamless multi-modal transport integration. Designed in line with green building standards, the project incorporates sewage treatment and water reuse systems, rainwater harvesting, and solar power generation. According to officials, the terminal will substantially enhance connectivity and passenger convenience.
