Grid Growth: India Surpasses 25,000 km of Gas Pipelines

India’s natural gas pipeline network has expanded to over 25,000 km as part of the government’s push to develop a fully integrated national gas grid.
To further strengthen connectivity, an additional 10,459 km of pipelines are currently under development.

To improve affordability and access to natural gas, the government introduced the “One Nation, One Grid, One Tariff” framework, which standardises gas transportation charges across nearly 90 per cent of the pipeline network. Complementing this effort, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has provided clean cooking fuel access to 10.35 crore households as of December 2025. The eligibility process has been simplified, and approval has been granted for the release of 25 lakh new LPG connections, helping accelerate coverage. LPG consumption has continued to rise, supported by targeted subsidies that enhance affordability.

In parallel, more than 90,000 LPG retail outlets have been upgraded with digital payment facilities, while 12.12 crore safety inspections have been carried out to strengthen consumer safety standards. The government is also prioritising increased domestic oil and gas production, with 172 exploration blocks awarded to boost upstream activity and enhance energy security.
