Guwahati's New International Terminal Takes Flight

The international terminal at Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is set to become operational by November 2025, according to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The announcement was made on August 6, during CM Sarma’s visit with a delegation from Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindful City to review construction progress.

“It will be opened in November, and we will invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate this state-of-the-art modern infrastructure,” Sarma said.

The Bhutanese delegation praised the terminal’s design and noted its potential to strengthen connectivity and collaboration between India and Bhutan.

The new terminal is expected to be a game changer for international air travel in Northeast India, enhancing regional integration and supporting economic growth.

In addition, the Assam government has ambitious plans to transform the area surrounding the airport into a major tourism and entertainment hub. On August 1, CM Sarma unveiled proposals for:

A Bharat Mandapam-inspired stadium, A convention centre for regional events and concerts, A Universal Studios-style entertainment park, Hotels and wedding venues

These initiatives aim to position Guwahati as a key gateway to Southeast Asia and a vibrant regional destination.
