Hyderabad's ₹7,000 Crore Infrastructure Dream Stalled

The ₹7,000 crore Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (HCITI) initiative remains largely unexecuted, with nearly 40 major infrastructure projects—including flyovers, underpasses, and road-widening works—seeing little to no progress, even seven months after their formal announcement.

While foundation stones have been laid at select sites such as Ameenpur, actual construction is yet to commence despite the completion of tendering processes. Many of these projects were originally approved under the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) years ago. For instance, six proposed flyovers and underpasses around Jubilee Hills and KBR Park—estimated at over ₹1,200 crore—require the acquisition of 307 properties. However, no acquisitions have taken place so far.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had offered a compensation rate of ₹1.84 lakh per square yard—double the government benchmark rate of ₹92,000—to expedite land acquisition. Plans also include widening the 6.5-km stretch from Virinchi Hospital to Jubilee Hills Checkpost via KBR Park, with road widths proposed to expand from 50–100 ft to 100–120 ft in high-congestion zones.

Despite receiving ₹2,600 crore in recent financial support, GHMC officials cite land acquisition bottlenecks as the primary reason for delays. Comprehensive traffic studies have been conducted to inform infrastructure development strategies under the HCITI framework, but tangible progress on the ground remains limited.
