IIT Bombay's Solar Innovation Secures ₹83 Cr for Pilot Plant!

IIT Bombay, through its start-up Advanced Renewable Tandem-Photovoltaics India (ART-PV India), has achieved a major breakthrough in solar energy. The team has developed a four-terminal Silicon/CdTe-Perovskite tandem solar cell that has reached an impressive 29.8% conversion efficiency—among the highest reported in India. This innovation is expected to pave the way for surpassing 30% efficiency, significantly outperforming current photovoltaic technologies and advancing India’s clean energy goals.

On 15 July 2025, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, visited IIT Bombay’s National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE). During his visit, he announced a grant of ₹83 crore from MNRE to ART-PV India to establish a pilot manufacturing facility on campus.

The Minister highlighted the initiative as a key step under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission and reaffirmed the government’s support for homegrown technological innovation. He encouraged IIT Bombay and ART-PV India to accelerate efforts toward commercial deployment and integration with the solar industry.
