India Builds a Giant: Dibang Dam Set to Be Country's Tallest

India has officially commenced construction of the Dibang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh, which will be the tallest dam in the country upon completion, standing at 278 metres.

Developed by NHPC Limited, the project is a key component of India’s hydropower and water security strategy. A global tender worth ₹17,069 crore has been floated for the construction of the dam’s main structure, with project completion targeted for 2032.

The ₹31,875 crore mega infrastructure project is designed to:

Generate 2,880 MW of clean hydropower, Produce approximately 11,223 million units of electricity annually, Mitigate flood risks with a storage capacity of 1,282 million cubic metres, Provide ₹700 crore worth of free power annually to Arunachal Pradesh, Strategically located, the Dibang dam will also serve as a critical buffer against any sudden water discharges from China’s Motuo Hydropower Station on the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra), strengthening India’s water security in the northeastern region.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, along with senior officials from NHPC, recently visited the project site to review progress and reaffirm the government’s commitment to timely and efficient execution.
