Japan's TDK to Manufacture Li-ion Battery Cells for Apple in India

TDK Corporation is embarking on a significant initiative to manufacture Li-ion battery cells for Apple within the Indian market. The renowned Japan-based electronic component and device manufacturer is in the process of establishing a sprawling 180-acre facility in Manesar, Haryana.

In this strategic partnership, TDK will serve as the primary supplier of battery cells to Apple's Li-ion battery assembler, Sunwoda Electronics. Presently, Sunwoda Electronics sources these cells globally, but with the upcoming local production facility, there will be a substantial increase in domestic value addition to Apple's products.

This development is also poised to generate numerous employment opportunities, contributing to the economic growth of the region. Additionally, the establishment of this plant is expected to fortify and expand the component ecosystem in India.

It is noteworthy that TDK's foray into the energy vertical received a significant boost in 2005 when it acquired Amperex Technology, a Hong Kong-based cell maker. This acquisition has played a pivotal role in strengthening TDK's capabilities and positioning it as a key player in the dynamic landscape of lithium-ion battery production.
