JSW Infrastructure, led by Sajjan Jindal and ranked as India’s second-largest private port operator, is poised to win a ₹832 crore contract for the development and mechanisation of two container berths at Netaji Subhas Dock (NSD), part of the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) under the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority.
JSW Infrastructure emerged as the highest bidder, quoting a record royalty of ₹4,678 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) — the highest ever for a brownfield container terminal project at a major government-owned port. It outbid Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), which quoted ₹4,020 per TEU. While DP World, Century Ports, and Navayuga Engineering Company were technically qualified, they did not submit financial bids.
The 30-year concession includes the reconstruction of Berth 8, mechanisation of Berths 7 and 8 using rail-mounted quay cranes (RMQCs), and operation of the terminal over a 25-acre backup yard. Upon award, this will mark JSW Infrastructure’s debut at Kolkata Port and its second container terminal project, following the facility at New Mangalore Port.
In FY2024–25, the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port handled 805,000 TEUs, with 620,000 TEUs processed at KDS and 185,000 TEUs at the Haldia Dock Complex, highlighting the strategic importance of the upcoming terminal in boosting eastern India's cargo handling capacity.
