The biggest correction needed here is that V. D. Satheesan is the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, not the Chief Minister (the Chief Minister is Pinarayi Vijayan). I have corrected that role, streamlined the phrasing for better flow, and made it punchier while keeping all the key project details intact.
The Kerala government has launched a techno-economic feasibility study to explore developing new airstrips in the Idukki, Wayanad, and Kasaragod districts.
Designed for small aircraft and helicopters, these proposed facilities aim to bridge regional connectivity gaps—especially in remote, rugged terrains where rapid access is vital for medical evacuations and disaster response. The initiative was highlighted in the Kerala Assembly as part of a broader state strategy to boost infrastructure and air connectivity in underserved regions.
To lead the project, the government has appointed the Kerala Rail Development Corporation (KRDCL) as the project management consultant. In turn, engineering and transport consultancy firm RITES has partnered with KIIFCON (selected via a tendering process) to conduct the detailed feasibility assessment. This study will thoroughly evaluate the technical, financial, and operational viability of building airstrips across the three districts.
A final decision on implementation will be made once the study concludes. If approved, the project is expected to dramatically strengthen Kerala's emergency response capabilities, unlock local tourism potential, and improve overall accessibility throughout the state's remote and hilly regions.
