Kochi Metro Begins Swift Phase II Expansion

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has officially commenced construction on Phase II of the Pink Line, marking a significant milestone in the city's transit development. The project was inaugurated by Industry Minister P Rajeeve, with key dignitaries in attendance. This phase includes the construction of a viaduct and the CEZ Metro station, set to revolutionize connectivity in Kochi.

Afcons Infrastructure Ltd., the contractor awarded the ₹1,141.32 crore contract for the 11.2 km viaduct, began piling work immediately after the inauguration. The project, valued at ₹1,957.05 crore, is slated for completion within 20 months. If achieved, KMRL will set a record as India's fastest metro construction agency. The overall Phase II project is expected to be completed within two years.

Financial backing for this ambitious project comes from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), which has approved ₹914 crore in assistance. KMRL MD Loknath Behera announced that a formal contract with AIIB would be signed in October, ensuring the necessary funds are secured for timely completion.

Preliminary preparations for Phase II included extensive groundwork, such as soil tests and topographical surveys along the proposed route from JLN Stadium to Infopark. The new stations will serve key areas, including Palarivattom Junction, Chembumukku, Kakkanad Junction, and Infopark, enhancing accessibility for commuters.

KMRL is also focusing on completing system and signaling work within four months after the viaduct construction. To minimize disruption, discussions are underway to explore alternative routes to alleviate traffic congestion during construction, ensuring that the city’s daily commute remains as smooth as possible.
