The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has unveiled the much-anticipated Meerut Metro at the RRTS Depot in Duhai, Ghaziabad. Designed for efficiency and comfort, the metro features three-car trainsets with a seating capacity for over 700 passengers, including 173 seats. The design integrates both 2x2 transverse and longitudinal seating, ensuring a comfortable journey.
Safety is paramount in the Meerut Metro, with all stations equipped with platform screen doors (PSDs) that synchronize with metro operations, effectively managing crowds. Energy-saving selective door openings are also integrated to enhance efficiency. Additionally, the metro is equipped with advanced safety features, including a passenger emergency communication system, fire extinguishers, alarms, and talk-back systems.
Manufactured domestically in Gujarat under the Make in India initiative, the Meerut Metro trainsets are state-of-the-art. They boast a design speed of 135 kmph and an operational speed of 120 kmph. The sleek, lightweight trains feature stainless steel construction, energy-efficient regenerative braking, and support for automatic train protection (ATP) and operations (ATO).
Operating along the existing RRTS infrastructure from Meerut South to Modipuram, the Meerut Metro spans 23 km with 13 stations. It includes 18 km of elevated tracks and 5 km of underground sections. The metro is expected to cover this distance in about 30 minutes, significantly reducing travel time and easing traffic congestion.
NCRTC Managing Director Shalabh Goel highlighted the metro's transformative impact on Meerut's transportation landscape, boosting economic growth and improving urban mobility. With construction progressing rapidly, the project is on track to meet its timeline, thanks to robust support from the central and state governments.
