Kolkata Port Goes Big: A ₹740-Crore Boost

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) has signed a 30-year concession agreement with JSW Infrastructure Ltd. for a ₹740-crore project to modernise container handling operations at the Netaji Subhas Dock.

The project includes the reconstruction of Berth 8 and the installation of rail-mounted quay cranes (RMQCs) at Berths 7 and 8, aimed at significantly enhancing the speed and efficiency of container cargo operations. Supported by a 25-acre backup yard, the upgraded terminal is projected to handle up to 500,000 TEUs annually, substantially boosting the port’s container throughput.

SMPK Chairman Rathendra Raman emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Government of India’s vision of developing world-class port infrastructure and improving trade facilitation. The concession signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from SMPK and JSW Infrastructure, including JSW Director Devki Nandan.

This strategic collaboration marks a key milestone in strengthening the Kolkata Dock System, improving logistics efficiency, and meeting the rising trade demands of eastern India.
