A high-level meeting chaired by Maharashtra’s Minister for Tourism, Shambhuraj Desai, was held in Mumbai to fast-track the Shiroda–Velaghar tourism project in Sindhudurg district.
The project, being spearheaded by the Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL), covers an area of 52.63 hectares and is envisioned as a world-class tourism destination. While land acquisition has posed certain challenges, the state government has approved a special compensation package for affected farmers, and a tripartite agreement involving IHCL, the government, and local villagers is in the process of being finalised.
Emphasising the project’s importance, Minister Desai stated that it would generate local employment, encourage sustainable development, and significantly enhance the region’s tourism potential. The development is expected to create job opportunities, promote local culture and enterprises, and improve supporting infrastructure.
With the involvement of Taj Hotels, the project is anticipated to attract both domestic and international tourists, positioning Maharashtra as a premium global tourism destination while ensuring that local resources and communities benefit from the economic growth generated by the project.
