On August 10, 2025, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated a 650-bed teaching hospital at Shaheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput, constructed at a cost of Rs 280 crore. The facility is aimed at significantly strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the state’s tribal-dominated regions.
The hospital will cater to patients from Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, and neighboring areas of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Equipped with advanced medical services including CT scan, dialysis, mammography, and a dedicated oxygen plant, the facility is expected to improve access to quality healthcare in the region.
Adjacent to the hospital, a dedicated cancer care facility is also under development, with Rs 41.15 crore already sanctioned for the project.
During the inauguration, the Chief Minister also announced the expedited construction of the six-lane Jeypore–Berhampur–Bhubaneswar Economic Corridor, a key infrastructure initiative to enhance regional connectivity and economic development.
Highlighting the government’s health initiatives, CM Majhi stated that around 80% of Odisha’s population is covered under Ayushman Bharat–PMJAY and Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana, including 3,00,547 beneficiaries in Koraput alone. Additionally, 9,006 individuals in the region have enrolled under the Ayushman Bayobandana Yojana.
He also noted Odisha’s expanding healthcare ecosystem, which includes over 29,000 empanelled hospitals and 12 functional government medical colleges, with more institutions in the pipeline.
