MEPZ's First Marine Export Unit Poised for Global Waters

The 8th Unit Approval Committee of the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) SEZ has approved BNT Marine Crafts (India) to convert its existing Domestic Tariff Area (DTA) unit in Abishegakuppam, Puducherry, into a 100% Export-Oriented Unit (EOU)—the first of its kind in the marine sector under MEPZ’s jurisdiction.

The company will manufacture a range of vessels for international markets, including semi-submarines, tourist vessels, commercial boats, and premium marine crafts. With a planned investment of Rs 2.25 crore, BNT Marine Crafts aims to generate net foreign exchange earnings of Rs 32 crore over the next five years. The unit is also expected to create 77 new employment opportunities, contributing to the region’s industrial and economic development.

According to MEPZ officials, the current financial year has already seen Rs 155 crore in new investments and the creation of 6,666 jobs across sectors. The approval of BNT Marine Crafts' EOU is viewed as a significant step in boosting marine manufacturing exports and diversifying the product mix within the MEPZ SEZ portfolio.
