Lakshadweep Gears Up for Tourism Boom with ₹3,600 Crore Makeover

The Indian government has unveiled an ambitious plan to revamp the Lakshadweep islands into a vibrant tourist destination, earmarking over ₹3,600 crores for infrastructure upgrades. These upgrades, part of the Sagarmala scheme for port development, will encompass enhancing ports, constructing peripheral roads, and establishing beachfront facilities, among other initiatives.

Key components of the plan entail developing port facilities at Androth, Kalpeni, and Kadamat islands, as well as constructing beachfront and peripheral roads at Kadamat Island (East), Agatti Island (East), and Kavaratti Island.

Funding for these projects will be sourced from the Sagarmala scheme, underscoring the government's commitment to leveraging coastal resources for development. A total of 13 projects spanning the 36 Lakshadweep islands, spread across 32 square kilometers in the Arabian Sea, have been identified for implementation.

This initiative aligns with the government's focus on boosting domestic tourism, as articulated by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. She emphasized the significance of bolstering port connectivity and tourism infrastructure, particularly on islands like Lakshadweep, to spur job creation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Lakshadweep further reaffirmed the government's dedication to the islands' progress. However, the visit was marred by controversy following derogatory remarks made by three Maldivian deputy ministers about Modi, sparking condemnation on social media.

Despite Lakshadweep's natural allure, the lack of adequate infrastructure impedes its potential as a tourist hotspot. The comprehensive plan aims to address these deficiencies and position Lakshadweep as a premier destination for travelers.

The Sagarmala scheme, initiated in July 2015, plays a pivotal role in India's port-led development strategy. It capitalizes on the nation's extensive coastline, navigable waterways, and strategic maritime trade routes.

Projects under Sagarmala, prioritizing social impact over financial returns, receive funding support. Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has highlighted the scheme's progress, with several projects either completed or in progress, signaling substantial investments for future development endeavors.
