Land Acquisition Approved for Airport in Parandur

The Tamil Nadu government has approved the acquisition of 3,774.01 acres of patta land in Parandur and 19 other villages in Kancheepuram district for the development of a new greenfield international airport for Chennai. The project is expected to cost ₹15,000 crores (US$1.8 billion) and will be executed by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO).

The new airport is expected to cater to the growing air traffic demand in the Chennai region, which is projected to reach 50 million passengers by 2037. The existing Chennai International Airport is expected to reach its saturation capacity by 2028, making the development of a new airport essential.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) conducted a feasibility study and identified the Parandur site as the most suitable location for the new airport. The site has the availability of airspace and is relatively free of natural obstructions. It is also close to the upcoming Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway. Additionally, the Parandur site will have a lesser impact in terms of displacement as the number of families to be displaced will be fewer compared to other potential sites.
