The Government of Punjab has strengthened irrigation infrastructure with the launch of a ₹44.83 crore lift irrigation scheme in Oind. The project was inaugurated by Barinder Kumar Goyal on April 23, 2026, and aims to expand canal water access to underserved agricultural areas in the Chamkaur Sahib region.
The scheme is set to provide canal-based irrigation to nearly 4,500 acres of farmland for the first time, reducing reliance on groundwater and private irrigation systems. Despite being close to major canals such as the Sirhind Canal and Bhakra Main Line Canal, several villages in the area have faced limited access due to infrastructure gaps and falling groundwater levels.
Under the project, water will be lifted from the Samrala Major System and conveyed through a 900 mm pipeline to a storage tank at Gaggon, before being distributed across surrounding villages via four networks.
The initiative is expected to enhance agricultural productivity, improve water security, and increase farmer incomes, supporting Punjab’s broader objective of sustainable and equitable irrigation development.
